EP Legal Affairs Committee
The new Committee VI on Legal Affairs and the Internal Market is responsible for matters relating to the following:
- Legal aspects of the creation, interpretation and application of Community law, including the choice of legal basis for Community acts and compliance with the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality.
- Legal aspects of the creation, interpretation and application of international law, in so far as it affects the European Union.
- All matters relating to the simplification of Community law, in particular legislative proposals for its official codification.
- Coordination at Community level of national legislation in the sphere of the internal market, in particular:
- the establishment and operation of the internal market (Arts. 14 & 15 EC);
- the right of establishment and the freedom to provide services (Arts. 43-55 EC), except for financial services;
- the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market [which of course has nothing to do with harmonisation in the internal market and is in reality the Community Trade Marks Office in Alicante].
- Intellectual property law.
- Civil liability law, contract law and procedural law, irrespective of the sector concerned.
- Consumers’ legal protection.
- Ethical questions related to new technologies.
